Gifts and friendship
Community sources describe two normal gifts per villager each week, with a separate birthday allowance. The English gift guide also gives a one-normal-gift daily cap and a Monday reset. Daily and weekly caps can both apply; they are not contradictory.

Each villager page repeats birthday (two sources) and a few likes (one source). Start with the birthday if you only trust the stronger pair.
